I have been in the business for a long time and I will tell you the difference. First, you had a great experience and lucked up with a person that ended up (1) Listening to you and consulting with you and your daughter, (2)Giving you a good haircut and (3) I have been through both ways of training and the chains usually tend to train quickly and then their employees work the same way, fast!!! And working fast u can make tons of mistakes. They are trained to get people(majority of men and wet cuts) in and out quick!!! On the other hand the high end salons put their stylists through vigorus classes and training and teach them anything from color, foils, cutting, perms, all the way down to customer service and how to keep clients. They teach consistency, and how to listen to clients. Things that some of the chains just don't take the time for. You are rarely ever promised the same person to cut your hair, so u don't ever gain a relationship with your stylist-someone who grows to know your hair and can cut it without you even telling them what to do after awhile. Just a few of the reasons, but there are sooo many that make us different, but I am glad that there are both types available for people. I guess sometimes you just have to work "in it" to understand all of it.

well, i think in new york city, you can get a haircut for 500 dollars? or was it 5,000 dollars? anyways, the stylist says that its not about the haircut, but walking out looking like you didnt get a haircut..the place comes with free tea.

fiesta or other chains like that have employees that are right out of beauty school.not a lot of practice

a stylist as you call it have years of experience.

No they are not trained the same, and though your hair can come out looking just fine in some areas on certain haircuts or dye jobs those stylists at those cheap places don't know what they are doing. The more expensive salons pay for their employees to be up to date on everything that they are doing and be trained in the most recent trends. There is a difference although if you are just getting a haircut I wouldn't spend the extra money.

At the place I go they charge based on the level of training the person has; more training = more $.

I have heard from a "stylist" that some of those places like Great Clips and Famous Hair don't employ people with a license, like one person said, the people that work there may still be in school for it whereas a stylist has had experience for awhile.
